A REVIEW ON THE PATTERN OF DEATH IN KOREA

Abstract
With special considerations to the results of survey on the pattern of death in Seoul which had ieen conducted during 3 months period from December 1, 1967, to Feburuary 28, 1968, some aspects of death in whole country were reviewed. Followings are the findings obtained from this review.
1. Conspicuous differences were observed between data based on reported cases and data on estimation. These differences are mainly due to under-reporting and one of the urgent tasks to be solved is the improvement or reporting system.
2. Estimated crude death rate ¢¥in whole country is 10 per 1,000 population. The crude death rate in Seoul was 5.6 In 1966 and 1967, according to the field study.
3. Infant death rate based on estimation in whole country was 58.2 per 1,000 live-births, while that rate based on field study in Seoul was 32.2. In general, conspicuous differences were shown in infant death rates between urban and rural areas; and also significant differences were observed in infant death rate in urban area owing to socioeconomical factors.
4. Proportion of neonatal deaths to the total infant deaths was 59. 8% in Seoul and 43.1% whole country.
5. Conspicuous differences were found in age-specific death rates between urban and rural area, and this tendency was more significant in infancy and childhood group.
6. Although some variations were found in cause of death with transition of years, diseases of digestive system, respiratory system, nervous system and sense organ, and infective diseaseshave been remained as major causes of death, in whole country. In Seoul, however, 3 major causes of death were accidents, vascular lesions affecting central nervous system and tuberculosis according field study.
7. Significant differences were observed in infant death rates between urban and rural areas and many of the causes of infant death were preventable ones in both areas.
8. Proportion of death certified by medial doctor was 28.2% in whole country, 78.7% in Seoul and 5.1% Jeon-nam Province.
